Exercise 12 - CURRENT AWARENESS POST
In this culture of iphones nothing is more powerful or more useless then the app
Rise of the App: How Smart phones and Tablet Computers Will Impact How Young Adults Find Information by Karen Meulen. Discusses the effect that this seeming endless amount of choice that now confront the average person with an iphone or smart phone
consider the numbing effect of never again having to ask anyone directions or really talk directly to any one at all at some time it apart that people may have two brains one that is storied in their head and the other that is surgically attached to there hand or store in their pockets (sorry about the brave new world imagery) and your only as smart as the app you have
but have we become to reliant on this new technology it the systems would crash is their a teenager or young adult who would reliably be able to find their way around? And where exactly is this sudden dependence on these systems leading us?
These are the questions posed by Karen Meulen read if you dare
Investigative Exercise 11 Recommendations
The Leichhardt public library while not completely lacking in web 2.0 technology could learn a few things from other libraries here I have created my perfect library as far as web 2.0 is concerned tell me if you agree
1. Local Studies
In an earlier post I looked at John Oxley Library Blog and mentioned the way it show cased the historical collect of the library in an engaging way Leichhardt has had more them enough historical significance to warrant a blog like this as a matter of fact the local history dept is already in the process of collecting audio interview with some of Leichhardt’s oldest residence engaging people to share their own opinions and experiences could greatly enhance this section
2. Children’s, Teenage/Youth
The Los Angeles public library has a mid blowing website set up for young adults this in my opinion could be the end all be all of teen library relations
But I’d take it a little bit further add forums instead of opinion polls as well as ways for the view to community their issues with the library in privet to a library employee or a councilor for personal problems
3. Adult Fiction
Very few people think about web 2.0 when it comes to the adult fiction section but so many things spring to mind online book clubs debates on the latest best seller over forums and contact the librarians suggesting different novels that they would want to read giving the selector a way of keeping up with the general publics reading trends
4. Information/Reference
Tags are always useful within catalogues as well as personal review left by book library users and librarians in the subject of the book and its usefulness
I could imagine local high school and primary school teachers leaving short words of praise for resource that they feel could help their students with different assignments while the students might tags the material that setts it self apart in a particular topic
The library staff might not have time to go though and look at each resource in depth by the general public certainly do
So there is my vision of a perfect library hope you like it

Investigative Exercise 10 Evaluation
the heart of the library |
the Leichhardt public library is a central branch library coordinating its efforts with its branch library in Balmain it delivers an effect service to the public servicing he needs of the growing population with a large selection of picture books and children's novels for young children as well as more interactive services such as a toy library and as baby and toddler activity groups
the library provides services to the elderly users though the use of large print novels and hsc student by providing study aids near the young adult fiction section and a selection of Italian novels for the waning Italian population
The Leichhardt library has yet to fully embrace the different opportunities the web 2.0 material although it does have a face book page as well as a library blog written mostly to keep users engaged with what the library its doing
I believe this is because of the local community and people who use the library, mostly but not exclusively older people who do not tend to be computer savvy and parents with young children who show little interest in the idea
You can view the council website here
Investigative Exercise 9 Community Profiles
Leichhardt is a thriving neighbourhood in transit close to the buses and only 15 minutes away from the city centre with multiple schools and parks within walking distance it is an attractive location for younger couples
Originally settled by Italian immigrants Leichhardt still holds strong to it European roots the main street supporting delicatessens and fashionable multicultural restaurants and the famous bar Italia

Exercise 8 - CURRENT AWARENESS POST
Modern social media is amazing with nothing but a computer or a mobile phone individuals are now able to connect with each other half way across the world from each other with all this technology at our finger tips it some times hard to remember the down side to all this identity theft, cyber bullying ect
the article Facebook privacy settings: Who cares? Discusses the pros and cons of one of thew worlds moat well known social networking sites
There have been multiple horror stories from this sight of stalking, bank account drainage or out of control parties
each time the website's administers are forces to put out a statement or an apology or even add new security precaution to try and protect certain careless users but is it really the fault of the website or do we simply have to be more aware of the dangers that this social networking poses in order to ovoid them in short the article say yes it is
it talks in depth about the privacy setting already in place on the sight and the kind of people that are making use of it describing things like internet familiarity, gender preferences (both in relation to the internet as a whole and face book it’s self) and fear as some of the motivators for seeking out more comprehensive security settings
This is a fascinating well researched piece aimed at administrators and users alike here’s a link read it for your selves
Investigative Exercise 7 Podcast
want to take a tour of the Albury-Wodonga Library? Well now you can with out leaving your seat hist pod cast in separated in to two part concentrating on different levels of the library
listen to to them both here
Investigative Exercise 6 Social Bookmarking
In looking in to the libraries and the options of the book reviewing and social book marking practices, it is interesting to see the different ways in which libraries will utilize this tool
the Tasmanian state library provides pop up windows for their reviews within the libraries catalog were as the the Stonnington library in Victoria has clear institutions about how to place a review and list the posted review on a separate page to the cataloging record this allows them to avoid the issue of cluttering their record with similar reviews while still having the service readily available
this is a useful tool in most libraries it allows the people who use the material on a regular basis to leave their thoughts and opinions on the subject for other users to see allowing both clients and safe to see how effect the material is in meeting the needs of the general public
Investigative Exercise 5 Social Networking
when it comes to social networking within a library it can be a boon, attracting more people to the library and ultimately making the librarians job of staying abreast of their clients needs and wants much easier, but it could just as easily back fire if not used properly and damage the reputation if not used correctly luckily there are many different tools available to the average library
for instance Myspace is a popular medium for businesses and groups rather then individuals but if the library wants to connect with individuals and provide opportunities for their clients to connect with on another Facebook is an invaluable tool.
in the end it's all a matter of being aware of your clients needs and expectations are to begin with and building on that to create and effective social medium to not only reach established users but also make other aware of what a great service you provide.
Investigative Exercise 4 Youtube
this is an interesting video focusing on the legendary librarian Nancy Pearl giving a talk on some of her favorite books I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

But I found this group Libraries from Around the World on flicker there produces a wide range of images always adding new pictures to the collection regularly in a celebration of the different ways that libraries are run around the world it contains images of both interior and exterior scenes as well as images of librarians and images of the little details that the individual photographer felt made each individual library special,
each image is accompanied by a map displaying where in the world the library is located the group its self has 226 members and 1866 images cached
Heres a link to Libraries from Around the World
